I recently finished watching the great series "Total Recall 2070" that was based on Philip K. Dick's universe. Philip K. Dick's absurdist blendings of philosophical problems with Sci-Fi has a unique flavor, so I'm looking for any TV or film works based on his writings.

I've already seen "Total Recall" and "Blade Runner".

"The Truman Show" movie always seemed like a near-ripoff of "Time out of Joint". And on that note it's interesting that the movie rights on the latter have apparently been sold to Warner Bros: philipkdick.com/films_intro.html – nmealy Jan 18 '11 at 22:27

It's probably worth mentioning The Lathe of Heaven, a movie based on the Ursula K. LeGuin novel of the same name, that novel having been called "the best novel Philip K. Dick never wrote" because it's essentially a full exploration of one of the dozens of amazing ideas Dick threw around like candy and never got to develop because of the markets he was working in. (This throwaway idea in particular coming from Ubik.) – chaos Jan 26 '11 at 21:24
I've posted this in an answer to another question earlier but the following book might be of interest: "Counterfeit Worlds: Philip K. Dick on Film" by Brian J. Robb, a slightly disjointed book but definitely worth reading if you are a PKD fan! – Richard Feb 1 '11 at 11:30

This question is too basic; it can be definitively and permanently answered by a single link to a standard internet reference source designed specifically to find that type of information. See the FAQ for guidance on how to improve it.

I have seen all of these other than Confessions d'un Barjo as it is French and really hard to find. You've already seen the really good ones, I'm afraid. Screamers and Imposter are good bad-movies, Next is fun. The rest are kinda blah.

  • Blade Runner - Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep
  • Screamers - Second Variety
  • Total Recall - We Can Remember It For You Wholesale
  • Confessions d'un Barjo - Confessions of a Crap Artist
  • Imposter - Impostor
  • Minority Report - The Minority Report
  • Paycheck - Paycheck
  • A Scanner Darkly - A Scanner Darkly
  • Next - The Golden Man
  • The Adjustment Bureau - The Adjustment Team

Soon To Come

  • King of the Elves - King of the Elves
  • Valis - Radio Free Albemuth (Maybe, supposedly it has been done for a while and even shown; go find it, support it, and DEMAND they make the sequel! It would be based on the book Valis!!!)

Total Recall, however, is about as loosely based a movie can get. There is a clinic that does what the Recall Clinic in the movie does, and a vague mention of about 1 paragraph for the rest of the film. The real story consists of a magic wand, aliens, and a promise to prevent the end of the world. Really. I know.

It's probaly Confession d'un Bar**j**o and not Bar**i**o – Frédéric Grosshans Jan 20 '11 at 22:06
@Frédéric Grosshans: you are correct, however, philipkdick.com/films_intro.html can you blame me? Typography fail. – DampeS8N Jan 21 '11 at 0:13
@DampeS8N : I don't blame you. I just happen to be French, and barjo happens to be a French word, while bario doesn't make any sense. I'm (sadly) not an expert in Philip K. Dick work. – Frédéric Grosshans Jan 21 '11 at 13:36
@Frédéric Grosshans: You can start by finding, and watching, this movie and telling me if it is any good. :) – DampeS8N Jan 21 '11 at 13:52

@scope_creep: to be clear, they are making Radio Free Albemuth, which is the movie inside of the book Valis. So, if THAT goes well (Meaning, BUY IT!!!) They will also make Valis. – DampeS8N Jan 21 '11 at 18:28
