2012 Moderator Election

I'd like to nominate myself as a potential moderator to Science Fiction & Fantasy.

For the past year or so since I first joined SciFi.SE with my question, "What is the best order to read HP Lovecraft novels?", I have continued to join the community and add thoughtful questions and well researched answers.

I have a passion for making this site the go-to site for all things Science Fiction & Fantasy as well as one of the friendliest, welcoming StackExchange sites.

As soon as I knew that I could edit posts or suggest edits or flag questions, I have tried my hardest to catch any spelling mistakes, typos and other quick fixes, as well as guide new members toward the accepted practices. I have also tried to raise questions in Meta to better understand the how this site should work and how to make the community as whole as can be.

I urge everyone to consider me for one of these positions.

My campaign promise is to abolish all Timelord questions.

If elected as Moderator I would nuture the site as well or better than the fish that recently died in my fish tank due to severe neglect.

For the serious minded:

This is the StackExchange site that I am most active on. I am typically asking and answering questions 5-6 days a week and participating in chat. I have a keen desire to see the site grow to a larger userbase; expanding to the far reaches of the science fiction and fantasy genres.

*No Morlocks were harmed in the making of this campaign. Well, a few might have been beaten, but we looked the other way. They are only Morlocks after all.

I am Kevin, and I want to be your moderator.

Many of you have probably seen me around, and those of you active in chat probably know me even better. (Incidentally, if you haven't been active in Mos Eisley, I encourage you to drop in and introduce yourself). I hope that my actions here and elsewhere on the SE network speak for themselves, but in case anyone needs more convincing, here is more about me.

During the day, I work as a programmer and so I can and do keep an eye on the SE sites on which I'm active (SF&F obviously, SO, MSO, and U&L) while my code is compiling and running. At night, I am even more active, working to improve the StackExchange network. Most of the time I'm around, I'm also in our chat room, Mos Eisley.

When I'm not answering questions, I spend most of my time doing site maintenance - editing questions that need it, going through the review queue, voting appropriately, flagging and voting to close when necessary. Being a moderator would give me the tools to use my time more efficiently, making our site and, by extension, the greater StackExchange network an even greater place to be.

Besides here, I am active on Stack Overflow, Unix & Linux, and Meta Stack Overflow. I have the Strunk & White badge here, on SO, and on Unix & Linux. On SO, I also have deputy, convention, reviewer, and copy-editor.

As a moderator, I will treat everyone fairly and guide our community with a gentle but firm hand, abiding by Jeff's Theory of Moderation.

A relatively humble user. Let me just reproduce what’s on my user page (which I just added :-)

Software engineer by day, crackpot theorist by night; writes science fiction; gets rejected by Analog Science Fiction & Fact; now writing first full-length science fiction novel with seven chapters down; plans to make money writing, retire and continue working on world domination plans.

If I’m elected?

I’ll keep doing what I already do, in addition to using the powers of moderation in, well... moderation. I’ll try to do a good job keeping the place clean and easy to use without upsetting anyone. If I do so unknowingly, don’t hesitate to drop me a mail.

One day I’d love to see this site become a resource all writers / science advisers consult before trying to develop science-related plots or scripts. Hopefully, we’ll have better science on TV and in the movies then!

I am currently one of the highest reputation users on this site, and have been with this site since day 1. I have been instrumental in many changes in this site, and am the 4tth highest answerer on the meta site, and the top asker of questions on meta as well..

I currently have moderator-like privileges, being as high of a reputation as I am, and I have been using them as best I can to help out the community. Some of the things that I have done include protecting topics which have received lots of newbie answers, closing many questions, and I frequently review edits that have been proposed by newer users.

I have also helped to expand the scope of this site, to bring in new users. I was the principal player in starting the conversation which resulted in the red text on this site, namely the word Fantasy. I saw a need to include fantasy, and worked until I got the answer that fantasy was now welcome here on this site. In the process of this, I started fantasy topics, including the now 4th most popular tag on this site, Harry Potter. I have also striven to bring in new series into the conversation, including the Inheritance Trilogy, Green Rider, Kane Chronicles, and others.

I have helped start the blog, although by my own admission I have not been doing as well there as I should. Still, I have written a large number of posts, and helped to bring some of the scope there.

I have a broad knowledge of Science Fiction and Fantasy, having been a fan of the genre for most of my life. I do not have as deep of a knowledge as I would like, but I have been striving to improve that knowledge.

In the early days of the site, there was much concern expressed by many of the SE staff and other moderators. I have helped to work with them to make this a better site than it was previously.

I have been a frequent user on the chat for most of the time the site has been up, occasionally slipping for a week or two away from it, but always returning. I have enjoyed getting to know more of you from the chat room.

When I'm not spending time on this site, I have contact with many other sites. Just to name a few, Meta Stack Overflow, Photography, Gaming, and Graphic Design. I have helped out with these sites as I can, and have been a moderator for some time at Graphic Design.

Several key badges I have that show I take this community seriously are Yearling, Sportsmanship, Electorate, Pundit, Fanatic, and Outspoken.

If elected, I will use my powers to help keep this site what it has already become with your help, a great resource on Science Fiction and Fantasy.

Starting simply, I want to be your moderator.
Why?
Because I love this QnA planet and I do everything here with passion. I visit it daily more than once. And, I vote on questions and answers frequently too. I don't have privilege to edit question & answers, but still I do it to put my work in queue. I don't drop a chance to edit a tag wiki excerpt if its blank.
After everything....

I am a vulcan. So, I think logically & emotions can't be a hurdle for me while moderating this QnA site.

Beyond participation for this QnA contents, I often discuss with you to clear concepts as well as understanding of topic which amuse all of us. So, vote me as a Lover of Science Fiction & Fantasy which is not limited to this QnA site..

I would like to nominate myself for moderator of the Science Fiction & Fantasy Stackexchange site.

I got off to a relatively late start here, but I've tried to make up for lost time with active and regular participation on the main site, the meta, and the chat room.

I am a long time sci-fi/fantasy geek, and I devoured any sci-fi or fantasy book or movie (including a wide range of "B" movies!) I could get my hands on.

My favorites include Star Wars, Star Trek (despite the implied heresy of liking both!), anything zombie-related (from the wonderful Zombieland to the wonderfully horrible Dead Snow), and anything with Bruce Campbell.

I have been moderator pro tem on the Parenting.se site since July of last year, so I am familiar with the responsibilities and tools of moderators. It has also provided me with a good background in site promotion, means of encouraging user participation, and how the community drives the policies and tone of a Stackexchange site. Parenting.se still has a lot of growing to do, though, and I find that my moderator duties there still leave me plenty of time to devote myself to other sites.

I firmly believe in the ability of the community to define itself, particularly through the meta site. On Parenting.se we try to encourage as much discussion in our meta, and discuss all moderation questions in a public chat in the interest of transparency.

I only step in when it is clear that moderator attention is needed. For any "borderline" situation I discuss the issue with my fellow moderators (and any other participants in our public chat), and generally wait to see what general consensus is. I also encourage that such borderline issues are discussed in meta, so that we can develop a clear policy as a result.

Most importantly (in my opinion, at least), I try to maintain an open mind. I will engage in spirited debate if I think my opinion has merit, but I can (and have) change my opinion if presented with well thought out opinions that differ from my own. I also will recognize when my opinion is in a minority, keeping in mind that this is a community-driven site, and that the community is where this site draws its utility from. Not individuals.
