The Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry is the primary setting for the first six booksmost of the harry-potter series by J. K. RowlingHarry Potter books, movies, and games. It is a fictional British boarding school of magic for around 600 witches and wizards between the ages of eleven and seventeen. Hogwarts is described by Rowling as:
A huge, rambling, quite scary-looking castle, with a jumble of towers and battlements. Like the Weasleys' house, it isn't a building that muggles could build, because it is supported by magic.
Theboarding school has numerous charms and spells on and around it that make it impossible for a muggle to locate itlocated somewhere in Scotland. Such people cannot seeAround the school; rather, they see only ruins and several warnings of danger. The castle has extensive grounds with sloping lawns, flowerbeds and vegetable patches,there is a loch (called The Black Lake)lake, a large dense forest (called the Forbidden Forest), several greenhouses and other outbuildingsQuidditch field, and a full-size quidditch pitch.
The primary mode of transportation to Hogwarts is the Hogwarts Express that students take at the start of each school year. Students board the train from Platform 9¾ at King's Cross station in LondonForbidden Forest. The train leaves at 11:00 amcastle and arrives at Hogsmeade Station, near Hogwarts, some time after nightfallits grounds are protected by magic.
Students typically attend Hogwarts isfor seven years, starting at age eleven. They are divided into four houses, each bearing the last name of its founder: Godric Gryffindor, Salazar SlytherinGryffindor, Rowena Ravenclaw and Helga Hufflepuff. The houses compete throughout the school yearSlytherin, by earningRavenclaw and losing points for various eventsHufflepuff, for the House Cup. Each house also has its own Quidditch team that competes foreach named after a founder of the Quidditch Cupschool.
