Jul 29, 2021 at 6:36 comment added ibid "stone-cast" does look weird, but Hammond and Scull didn't correct it so I assume it's not a printers error. Just Tolkien using fun new words as he does.

Dec 10, 2015 at 16:24 comment added Yorik Think of it like "gunshot/gun shot/gun-shot". My point is that as it is, it is not wrong. The reading of it as a compound noun is both correct and grammatical. It is also in keeping with the stylistic context.
Dec 10, 2015 at 16:20 comment added Rand al'Thor @Yorik Ah, but the stone-cast wasn't what crushed his helm! It was the stone (or the stone-impact if you want a compound noun) which did that. I still think it's a typo :-)
Dec 10, 2015 at 16:17 comment added Yorik compound nouns are generative: you cannot list them all. Stone-cast refers to the casting of the stone, not the stone itself.
Dec 10, 2015 at 15:03 comment added Rand al'Thor @Yorik I'm pretty sure it should be "the stone cast from Barad-dur" (i.e. the stone that was cast). I've never heard a compound noun "stone-cast", and the only definition I can find is this, which doesn't fit the sentence.
Dec 10, 2015 at 14:58 comment added Yorik curious why the compound noun "stone-cast" was [sic]'d

Dec 10, 2015 at 13:14 comment added Rand al'Thor @maguirenumber6 And what is the source for your statement on the source of the rock? :-)
Dec 10, 2015 at 5:49 comment added maguirenumber6 It might be useful to add that the source of this rock was Barad-dur, possibly fired from a catapault or trebuchet during the Siege.
