Feb 9, 2016 at 17:14 comment added Hypnosifl If they don't use artificial wombs or liberating babies from growing fields, maybe the most likely answer is the one Null suggested that they mainly increase their numbers through liberation of redpills. Suppose each Zionite can only manage to contact, recruit and liberate one person from the Matrix every four years--that would mean their population could potentially double every four years, so there'd be 25 doublings in 100 years, which means an increase by a factor of 2^25 = 33,554,432 (and you'd have to multiply that by the original population of 24). Exponential growth is a powerful thing!
Feb 9, 2016 at 17:10 comment added Valorum They're evidently trying something new and using a virtual "baby field" to see whether it's possible. The problem seems to be that the fields are very well guarded and the emotional impact on the would-be rescuers
Feb 9, 2016 at 17:07 comment added Hypnosifl @Richard - Does the comic suggest whether this is something the Zionites regularly do (and the one in the comic is just a mission that goes wrong), or whether they are trying something new?
Feb 9, 2016 at 17:04 comment added Valorum One of the matrix comics deals with the issue of liberating babies from the growing fields. Suffice to say it doesn't go well for those involved
Feb 9, 2016 at 16:57 comment added Escoce Possible, sure...but not bloody likely considering sentiment. Also, where is there any indication that such a thing is even thought of let alone exists? My opinion is that this would be anathema to Zion.
Feb 9, 2016 at 16:54 comment added Hypnosifl The Zionites have adapted a lot of the Machines' technology, isn't it possible they also adapted the technique of growing babies in pods to create some sort of artificial womb technology that, combined with in vitro fertilization, could expand the population much faster than if they relied solely on reproducing the old-fashioned way?

Feb 9, 2016 at 16:21 comment added Null I understand your skepticism that Zion would be able to grow so quickly, but a timeframe of "several hundred years" just doesn't fit with the information we're given in the movies. I've added another point to my answer -- the Oracle also puts an upper bound on the length of time the Matrix iteration can last.
Feb 9, 2016 at 16:09 comment added Escoce They can't rescue them all. Only those that are caught in their proverbial net and ready to accept reality which is not the same thing as rejecting the matrix. There are only so many ships and teams to catch them.
Feb 9, 2016 at 16:05 comment added Null There are about 6 billion people in the Matrix and 1% of them reject the Matrix. That means Zion has about 60 million potential red pills. Not all of them are going to be released, but that's a much bigger pool to draw from than "7 males and 13 females".
Feb 9, 2016 at 16:01 comment added Escoce I think that has an impact comparable to interest in interest earning bank accounts. How many people can get rescued from the matrix in any given period of time? That is an unanswered question, but we can extrapolate that it can't be all that many at once. First a suitable mind needs to be identified, contact needs to be made and that mind needs to be gently pushed to accept reality. How many ships does Zion have to dedicate to this mission? How many minds can each team focus on at one time?
Feb 9, 2016 at 15:56 comment added Null You are forgetting the fact that Zion is continually adding to their numbers by releasing people from the Matrix.
