But only if you are interested in clothing in the first place. Tolkien was creating a Christian values tale of valor and sacrifice in LotR. Detailed description of clothing could probably seem as frivolous and unnecessary to him as it does to me.

Jun 18, 2016 at 22:26 | comment | added | Marakai | @MagnusSmith oh, for a ride along the beach and into the waves on a tropical island? Certainly! Through middle earth and back? The pain, oh the pain.
Jun 18, 2016 at 22:24 | comment | added | Marakai | @PJTraill yes, but I don't think that I could or should cram these into a comment here. Would have to go to chat if I understand the rules?
Jun 18, 2016 at 19:47 | comment | added | PJTraill | @Marakai: what makes you say he was ignorant about riding? Are there obvious errors in the descriptions of Rohan?

Jun 18, 2016 at 14:01 | comment | added | Magnus Smith | @Marakai - "One does not simply.....ride a horse without fabric protecting thighs and genitalia from saddle abrasion."
Jun 17, 2016 at 21:45 | comment | added | Kenogu Labz | Don't forget the over-compensation in clothing descriptions by beloved Robert Jordan.
Jun 17, 2016 at 4:55 | comment | added | Marakai | @Simba Ha! How about: for someone who was born in the tail end of the Horse Age, he was remarkably ignorant about all things equestrian! Guess Oxford dons barely knew what end was forward in a horse. :P
Jun 16, 2016 at 22:32 | comment | added | Kyle Strand | @Simba I, too, find alcohol and smoking (two of Tolkien's non-linguistic pet topics in the books) more interesting than pants, and I'm not even a smoker.
Jun 16, 2016 at 17:42 | comment | added | GreySage | Also never forget that he was first and foremost a linguist, who made up these worlds and stories to go along with the languages he was creating.
Jun 16, 2016 at 17:42 | comment | added | DVK-on-Ahch-To | @Simba - look at the sidenote in the question. It's a typical, VERY typical trope, for writers to not bother with writing details of clothing at all, or only mention 1-2 clothing pieces which are distinctive. So typical it's made fun of by other writers.
Jun 16, 2016 at 17:14 | comment | added | David Mulder | @Simba: Never forget that he grew up in a very very different world.
Jun 16, 2016 at 16:20 | comment | added | Simba | I find it really weird that Tolkein would go into such fine detail about so many aspects of life in Middle Earth, and then simply not be interested in what they wear. Clothing styles in societies like those in Middle Earth can be a big part of national or regional identity. Strange that he'd dismiss the subject so glibly.
