Jun 26, 2016 at 17:59 | comment | added | Himarm | dont forget Ruin is in Vin's head the entire time, via her earing, he could very well have suggested his own name TOO her. His shard is the shard of ruin, in the cosmere so despite what vin decides to call him, his name was intended to ruin the entire time anyway.

Jun 26, 2016 at 17:39 | comment | added | Radhil | This is as correct as it gets, but it doesn't really answer why. I'd always assumed that releasing it gave Vin some connection to Ruin and she could feel what he was, the same way that Marsh knows the name simply because he's there in his head all the time, but that doesn't jive with how she has to figure out the rest of the god-business on her own.
Jun 25, 2016 at 23:04 | comment | added | Rand al'Thor♦ | @Obie2.0 When did the kandra refer to it by name? I haven't found that in the text. (Re spoilers: I haven't finished the third book yet, so for my sake as well as the OP's, please don't reveal anything like how it ends!)
Jun 25, 2016 at 23:03 | comment | added | Adamant | I can think of a few good reasons. The most obvious is that Ruin is simply the only/most obvious name in their language for what it does. The second is that she remembers what the kandra said (was she there?) The third is a bit spoilery, but I think you can guess it.

Jun 25, 2016 at 22:46 | comment | added | Adamant | It was not coined by Vin (the Kandra use it). Ruin is not simply a name...it is what Ruin is.
