Dec 16, 2016 at 19:03 | comment | added | Santa | @Edlothiad Okay, how about this. The question is explicitly about video logs (you edited the title yourself, natch). Yet your answer is only about the book, which didn't have those. (And the log format does matter, since many people here immediately thought about filesizes.) I've got it pieced together in my head to my satisfaction, thanks to all of you and your input. But I can't really say the question is addressed by your answer as it is. How about editing to account for movie version?

Dec 15, 2016 at 20:09 | comment | added | Gallifreyan | @Santa - the problem is that the movies exist in a different continuity - the one where Mark got to pull off his Iron Man stunt. Thus, getting a word of god for the movies will be very difficult. Hat tip to Edlothiad for reaching out to Weir - didn't occur to me we mortals could do that! :D
Dec 15, 2016 at 19:03 | comment | added | Edlothiad | @Santa, sadly this is the closest you're going to get to a definite answer. The books himself are devoid of any such information and similarly the films don't show him uploading it either. The only possibility of it being sourced anywhere is if you could access the online serialized version as Pete says, but they're no longer accessible since the book is now sold for profit.
Dec 15, 2016 at 18:48 | comment | added | Santa | @Edlothiad Props for reaching out to Weir. I accept it is likely the text logs were uploaded via the MAV in the book. The fate of video logs can be assumed to be the same (since Mark had weeks to upload them once he arrives at the MAV, so bandwidth is not an issue). But I feel a definite answer would need to come directly from either the book or the movie.

When he says in the book , he intends to draw a line between the film and the book. So in his book Mark did upload them via MAV link (although it is left out of the pages). Weir is not responsoble for the film, because he isn't.

Dec 15, 2016 at 11:19 | comment | added | Edlothiad | Possible, however I feel like his response is definite, regardless of whether a written source can be found (I'll keep looking though). He may have intended to imply the action, and expected readers to understand
Dec 15, 2016 at 11:14 | comment | added | user71418 | Or it could be on his online serialized version of the book, which I've not read.
Dec 15, 2016 at 11:13 | comment | added | Edlothiad | @Pᴇᴛᴇ, I thought the same, reading it this morning and last night (to make sure my question wasn't redundant), could it be possible that he'd written it and it got removed in editing and he forgot?
Dec 15, 2016 at 11:11 | comment | added | user71418 | Interesting. I just read through the end of the book from when Watney gets to the MAV. Although it mentions Watney storing his collected samples in a container near the launch area, nothing at all is mentioned regarding the logs (apart from him creating more).
