Apr 27, 2012 at 13:33 | comment | added | Tara | vcs, I just saw This Time of Darkness where a girl is shunned for knowing how to read. Maybe that's the one you're thinking of?
Apr 27, 2012 at 12:23 | comment | added | Tara | Yeah. Definitely not. I just was on Amazon. I keep hoping they will suggest a book at the bottom but no go! The titles all sound familiar but there were no parents. Maybe I need to be hypnotized! :P It's like it's on the tip of my brain!
Apr 27, 2012 at 2:10 | comment | added | Tara | Hey Keith. I do kind of remember Meg. But the thing that threw me when I was looking is I definitely don't remember the Mrs. Whatsit, etc. Were they separate from the story with Meg? I checked about The City Under Ground and that was a no go. I'll have to poke around at the Time Quartet when I get a chance...off to watch Mentalist. ;) I'll definitely check it out more tomorrow. Thanks for the info!

Apr 26, 2012 at 17:56 | comment | added | K-H-W | The City of Ember is too new for the timeframe you mention.. But it was based on Suzanne Martel's 'The City Under Ground' (aka Surreal 3000) which might also fit, although I believe both protagonists were male.

Or Mrs. Whatsit, Mrs. Which or Mrs. Who? She's written other books (many of them), but the Time Set is the most often recommended by English Teachers in my experience. Remember any character names, if the above don't ring any bells?
Apr 26, 2012 at 6:15 | comment | added | vsz | This reminds me on a book I read a long time ago, but it's vague... Did it involve a social structure, where the average was worshipped, and every person having not average properties (beauty, intelligence, etc.) were considered aberrations, and were oppressed?
Apr 26, 2012 at 2:48 | comment | added | Tara | I feel like it was a newer book at the time? Not sure? I kept thinking it was Madeleine L'Engle but when I poked around Amazon none of the plots sounded right. I was 12 at the time so...it's a shame I don't remember more since I did read it multiple times! The memory is so vague...
Apr 25, 2012 at 22:34 | comment | added | K-H-W | That, unfortunately, covers a LOT of books! Do you have any more recollections? Perhaps the cover? Any commonly used phrases in the book? Any plot info? The more you can provide, the better a chance of getting a good answer..
