May 10, 2012 at 21:30 comment added Anthony Grist @adityamenon They asked Phineas Nigellus if he could bring Dumbledore with him from his portrait in the Head's office at Hogwarts to the portrait they'd taken from Grimmauld Place, but were told that wasn't possible, so it's not as if they didn't consider talking to Dumbledore. The key point, though, is that by the time they could risk going to Hogwarts, they already had all of the knowledge they needed about the Horcruxes, so there wasn't any need to talk to Dumbledore's portrait then.

May 10, 2012 at 13:45 comment added Aditya M P Thanks, yes that seems most probable. I also forgot quite a few details about the 7th book, like Snape being headmaster! I also think Dumbledore might place some enchantments on the portrait preventing it from knowing/saying too much... he's such a thorough guy!
