Oct 24, 2017 at 17:17 | comment | added | Mithical | @FabioTurati - for one, the thickness - younger trees are generally thinner, so the older it is the thicker it is. Second, yes, the gnarledness - AFAIK that does imply age in a tree, although I'm not confident about that.
Oct 24, 2017 at 17:10 | comment | added | Fabio says Reinstate Monica | I don't understand how that quote supports that the tree is old. Is it because of the "gnarled" boughs? That doesn't imply it's old, especially for a tree (whereas I agree that a gnarled finger would imply an old person). Or maybe you meant something else?
Oct 24, 2017 at 14:05 | comment | added | kaine | I guess the age of the Willow should be a new question...
Oct 24, 2017 at 12:57 | comment | added | alephzero | Nothing Lockhart says is necessarily true - he lives in his own fantasy world most of the time. And in the real world, old trees can be successfully moved and replanted without any magic. I've personally successfully transplanted a rose bush that was known to be at least 100 years old.

Oct 24, 2017 at 9:51 | comment | added | Mithical | @Morrigan - but then that would go against what Prof. Snape is saying: that it is old.
Oct 24, 2017 at 9:50 | comment | added | user68762 | @Mithrandir or they could've enhanced the growth by magic
Oct 24, 2017 at 9:49 | comment | added | Mithical | @Morrigan - it wouldn't have been much use for protecting the opening if it was seedling then. Presumably it was transferred from somewhere else, not planted as a seed when Lupin arrived.
Oct 24, 2017 at 9:47 | comment | added | user68762 | how it's old? the WW was planted in 1971 which is baby age for a tree...
Oct 24, 2017 at 9:28 | comment | added | motosubatsu | You found the reference to other examples in Chamber of Secrets that I had missed (I've edited my answer to include mention of it now)!
Oct 24, 2017 at 9:22 | comment | added | Mithical | Oh, I didn't notice that @motosubatsu got there first. Ah well. Mine includes quotes, at least.
