I would refer you to the works of Roger Sperry, Iain McGilchrist (The Master and His Emissary), Allan Schore (6+ research books and dozens of journal articles), etc. The Right Mind by Robert Ornstein gives a clear overview. I cannot imagine finding a current research expert in neuroscience who would disagree with the fact of radical hemispheric differences.
Nov 26, 2017 at 16:49 comment added Jon Hanna The idea of the brain's hemisphere's having such different functions is now debunked, and like Star Wars belongs with fun ideas from the 1970s that don't have much basis in fact, though they perhaps remain a useful shorthand for intuitive versus analytical thinking.
Nov 20, 2017 at 8:02 comment added soulfulpsy I have no idea if Kubrick knew about the differences in the ways in which the hemispheres function, but that doesn't much matter in the sense that as an artist he had to have a feel for the differences. Buddhist Mindfulness Meditation, used increasingly in psychotherapy, rests on the same discovery. The phenomenon has been there to be encountered long before neuroscience could offer its detailed explanation. My interest is one level deeper, namely the metaphysics of Alfred North Whitehead which actually described these two modes almost 90 years ago in Symbolism: Its Meaning and Effect.
Nov 20, 2017 at 7:33 comment added Edlothiad With regards to 2001: A Space Odyssey, or about the hemisphere's in general. I say your citations, I just meant more with regards to linking Stanley Kubrick's intentions to the difference of the two hemispheres.
Nov 20, 2017 at 7:31 comment added soulfulpsy I've cited two sources for the information about how the hemispheres work. I also have an article due to be published in a journal early next year that expands upon this topic.
