Feb 17, 2018 at 17:07 comment added marcellothearcane @doctordonna that links with Kevin Fee's comment too - 'Montague's daring apparition to the U-bend' was probably on the Slytherin common room's HNQ for a while, but only Draco (who was looking for any scheming way to get Dark Lord plus others into Hogwarts) realised what was going on
Feb 16, 2018 at 0:09 comment added doctordonna There's a short mention on HP wikia about how Draco may have come to discover it's powers. "In 1996, Fred and George Weasley shoved Graham Montague headfirst into the broken cabinet on the first floor of Hogwarts when he tried to take points away from them. Montague eventually escaped (by Apparating) and was found in a toilet's u-bend by Draco Malfoy, who summoned Professor Snape for help. Montague revealed the previously unknown powers of the Cabinets to Draco."
Feb 12, 2018 at 19:32 comment added Kevin Fee Malfoy believes he is the first to figure out the vanishing cabinets the same way Riddle believes he is the only one to have figured out the Room of Requirement. This is their own arrogant beliefs that do not reflect reality.
Feb 11, 2018 at 8:30 comment added user88577 @TheDarkLord I confess, it could have decorative value.
Feb 11, 2018 at 8:22 comment added The Dark Lord It seems that it was one of a number of decorative items lining the halls of Hogwarts
Feb 11, 2018 at 7:56 comment added user88577 @Ifurini What would be the point of buying a single Vanishing Cabinet without its pair? Only people who're interested in using it would be willing to buy it. It can only be used if other one of the pair is available. Can you think of any way by which a VC is valuable without its twin?
Feb 11, 2018 at 7:53 comment added lfurini @Mr.Riddle Filch believes it to be valuable (as an ancient piece of furniture can be), not useful.
Feb 11, 2018 at 7:39 comment added user88577 Filch says the Cabinet was useful. A VC can be useful only when you know which other Cabinet it's connected to. So Malfoy was probably not the first one to find out the connection between the Cabinets, even if he thought he was.
Feb 11, 2018 at 7:18 comment added The Dark Lord This doesn't seem likely to me. Malfoy himself says that he was the first one to figure out that the cabinets were linked.
