Mar 14, 2018 at 23:29 comment added n00dles @TOOGAM I've experienced something similar, so now, if I put some time into an answer and I have to leave it, I copy, paste and save it into a txt file. It only takes a few seconds with keyboard shortcuts.

Mar 11, 2018 at 2:19 comment added TOOGAM Aw drat. I had typed up an answer making the case for Odo, and tried to save it to post after activity around the Picard answer died down a bit, but the saved text file was only zero bytes. :( And I don't plan to re-research and re-type it all. Actually, though, Odo's various positions (Cardassian, Bajoran) were just an an example of the real, true answer, which is: the Great Link. If you keep in mind that the Great Link is both many and also singularly one, then that one entity character (which has split itself) has certainly qualified for having the most positions (simultaneously, even!)

Mar 7, 2018 at 22:46 comment added Stephen R Here it is: scifi.stackexchange.com/a/99480/87750 EDIT: Hmm... maybe that's not what I saw previously. I seem to recall a longer list, but I can't be sure
Mar 7, 2018 at 5:51 comment added n00dles @StephenR I'd like to see that list.

Mar 6, 2018 at 1:01 comment added jpmc26 Trying to exclude things tends to lower the quality of these questions. They become nasty little debates about what "counts" and what doesn't. I encourage you to be permissive and just ask that answers provide a full break down when there's questionable occurrences that other readers (including yourself!) might decide aren't worth counting.
Mar 6, 2018 at 0:20 comment added Ellesedil @n00dles: I actually retract part of that comment. Commander Shelby, who is temporarily assigned to the Enterprise as part of the investigation into the Borg, is made first officer so that Riker can keep everyone else at their regular positions. So, Data doesn't actually get promoted. I was envisioning Data in command red during Chain of Command.
Mar 6, 2018 at 0:11 comment added n00dles @Ellesedil Well Data being a temporary captain obviously counts. As for your first point, which is a really good one; I'm not sure. Wouldn't half the senior officers move up ranks with Riker in command?
Mar 5, 2018 at 22:12 comment added Ellesedil What about temporary positions? There are two scenarios for them that I can think of. 1) Riker is given a field commission to command the Enterprise temporarily in "Best of Both Worlds", which also affects Data as he's promoted to First Officer. 2) Data is given command of the Sutherland in "Redemption II", for which he is captain, and retains that position until the fleet assignment is completed.
Mar 5, 2018 at 22:00 comment added JohnP @Harper not the rank, but even admirals have job descriptions. :)
Mar 5, 2018 at 21:37 comment added Harper - Reinstate Monica I would nominate Ro Laren but don't have the depth of knowledge to prove it (don't suppose admiral would count).
Mar 5, 2018 at 21:15 comment added n00dles Neelix was a jack-of-all-trades. Wonder how many roles he had. I remember him being ambassador, security, and a sort of councilor (crew morale).

Mar 5, 2018 at 15:55 comment added JohnP @NKCampbell - Hrm. Hrm again. You're talking about Face of the Enemy, I presume. Yes that would count, even though coerced. She accepts the role, acts as such, and exerts the authority of the position even to the person that originally kidnapped her.
Mar 5, 2018 at 15:48 comment added NKCampbell what if Romulan spies made Troi a Romulan Tal Shiar commander?
