Aug 19, 2021 at 20:57 comment added PM 2Ring Why do you say that Gandalf exited via the West Gate on his first passage, when he searched for Thráin? Surely, if he'd passed that way he'd be aware of the state of the Gate-stream. OTOH, I suppose the change to the stream was relatively recent...

Apr 21, 2018 at 6:00 comment added M. A. Golding Moria didn't fall until Gandalf had been travelling around middle-earth for almost 1,000 years.
Apr 21, 2018 at 1:15 comment added Harry Johnston It seems unlikely that Gandalf had never traveled that road before, but it may have been long long ago, perhaps even before the fall of Moria.
Apr 20, 2018 at 23:07 comment added Nicola Talbot On rereading the passage, it's just occurred to me that Gandalf does go on to say "If you wish to know, I will tell you that these doors open outwards. From the inside you may thrust them open with your hands." I suppose that could mean that he entered from the East and went all the way through and out the West Gate, or he could have picked up that information from elsewhere.

Apr 20, 2018 at 22:03 comment added Nicola Talbot Gandalf does explicitly state that he came from the East after Boromir says "Then what was the use of bringing us to this accursed spot? [...] How could that be if you did not know how to enter?" Gandalf says "[...] I did not enter this way. I came from the East."
