May 26, 2018 at 22:10 | comment | added | The Dark Lord | I agree with Anthony Grist. I think that Harry probably sent them a message saying something along the lines of "I'm staying at Hogwarts for Christmas. If you want to send a present then you can send it with Hedwig."
May 26, 2018 at 21:23 | comment | added | Obsidia | @AnthonyGrist Hedwig had to have gone to the Dursleys first for them as wizard-hating Muggles to send her back to them. Also, I don’t think Harry would be writing them a message on his own.
May 26, 2018 at 20:22 | comment | added | Anthony Grist | @Bellatrix Hogwarts has numerous school owls, so there's literally no reason a staff member would use Hedwig.
May 26, 2018 at 19:52 | comment | added | Obsidia | @AnthonyGrist Yeah, but if a Hogwarts staff member says they want to send Hedwig to the Dursleys with something like a notification that Harry is staying for Christmas, they might say something like “Your nephew is spending Christmas at Hogwarts, you may send a present with this owl”, and they could be asked that way.
May 26, 2018 at 19:36 | comment | added | Obsidia | @Flitoangel That’s possible - I checked and there’s no mention of what the message is.
May 26, 2018 at 19:24 | comment | added | Anthony Grist | "it may be a message telling them to send Hedwig back with a present for Harry." Harry isn't going to ask them for a present (he knows better than that), and nobody else is going to send Hedwig without asking Harry's permission first, so this seems unlikely.
May 26, 2018 at 19:16 | comment | added | Obsidia | @Valorum Thanks! :) Yeah, I strongly suspect they’ll be like “just give that ruddy owl something and make it leave!”.
May 26, 2018 at 18:54 | comment | added | Flitoangel | I believe the message was to tell the dursleys that Harry was going to stay at Hogwarts for Christmas vacation.
May 26, 2018 at 17:08 | comment | added | Valorum | Precisely so. Their presents are clearly whatever's on the table in front of them when the owl arrives; 50p, a toothpick, a tissue, etc.
