I.e., being unable to go to warp because the inertial dampers failed could be a great plot point if the obvious way out of trouble is to go to warp. Most of the time, inertial dampers failing has no consequence. It's something shouted while the crew is in combat, and brings me out of immersion. Canonizing changelings being trans-subspace beings would be a way to detect subspace disturbances using established Trek tech, which pokes more holes in changelings on Earth, which is important to the plot.
Oct 11, 2018 at 16:36 | comment | added | Chris | @HamSandwich: Possibly a question worthy of more than just a comment but I would imagine it is roughly that technobabble tends to be scientifically dubious and for people that know about whatever area of science this can cause a big disconnect. So if its not relevant why put technobabble in that won't really help anything and will likely detract form the experience for some people. If it is core to the story then it gets on screen and the science geeks just have to look past the babble.

Oct 11, 2018 at 14:18 | comment | added | Ham Sandwich | I've never understood why people are so afraid of technobabble. Apparently even the writers were! Isn't it a science-fiction show?
