Oct 14, 2015 at 9:02 | comment | added | John Bell | It's clear that Eru directly removed Sauron from his fair form. Binding him to only being able to manifest a physical form that encompasses his shame, guilt and hate.
Oct 14, 2015 at 8:56 | comment | added | John Bell | Tolkien says this is Letter 211: Sauron was first defeated by a ‘miracle’: a direct action of God the Creator, changing the fashion of the world, when appealed to by Manwë. This was part of an answer to someone questioning how the One Ring could have still been in his possession, even after his body had been diminished and he was no more than a spirit of hatred borne on a dark wind.

Sep 23, 2015 at 16:43 | comment | added | John Bell | That his body was torn apart in the fall of Numenor? I don't have enough characters to link all the sources, it's well known.
Sep 7, 2015 at 14:59 | comment | added | JMD | Source for that? I checked online and don't see that fact anywhere.
Sep 7, 2015 at 8:50 | comment | added | John Bell | It's also interesting to know that this isn't the first time he was "nerfed". When Eru reshaped the cosmos and ripped Numenor apart, he accidentally (on purpose) dropped a big rock on Sauron and from that point on he could only manifest as a representation of his own evil. Before that he would present himself in beautiful form to deceive and corrupt.

Previously it sounded a little like Narsil was the name of his fallen father, when Narsil is in fact the name of the sword.
