No matter how strong your planetary defenses are, at some point you have to bring the fight to your enemy, or you lose. It's quite possible they'd have ships even if it was just to deter attempts at war - you usually think twice before attacking the enemy that can reach your homeworld. Not to mention that you really have to catch the attacking fleet en-route to prevent damage and civilian casulties (Vulcan doesn't have planetary shields). | |

'Twasn't meant to be, just an additional possible suggestion that also sort-of explains why they have powerful ships as well. | |

But for me it's hard to believe that there isn't a fair number of Vulcan planets that just haven't been mentioned. For example, why would they need dozens of warships including Warp 7-capable "Battle Cruisers" (ENT:United) if they just needed to protect their homeworld and a handful of nearby outposts? It seems such a small-scale Vulcan would be better off with a planet based defense system: The technologically inferior humans had the Verteron array and its power appeared to far outclass ship mounted weapons of the time. | |
