Apr 29, 2019 at 18:22 comment added Delioth This doesn't jive with the MCU's take on time travel. Notably, that actions of 2023-Steve-Rogers affected the past of the MCU-snap-timeline. The MCU is very explicit that when you travel back in time, you're always in a different timeline to your own. Because while the events are in the past, future you is affecting them so they're in your future, and your future can't change your past. And even then all the stones weren't put back - Loki yoinked the Space Stone so all events post-Avengers 1 are up in the air in that timeline.
Apr 29, 2019 at 16:57 comment added Andrey I don't like this. This makes Gamora's resurrection sound like cheating. Now we can rez anyone this way, time travel, get a stone, bring them to us, return the stone.

Apr 29, 2019 at 11:09 comment added Paul @DhonJoe. I see what you're getting at now. The recent edits to the answer make it much more clear to me than the original version as well. Thanks.
Apr 29, 2019 at 7:51 comment added Dhon Joe @Paul with all due respect, I think that you are missing the point, and this has all to do with whether or not the stonnes were returned. Cap returned BEFORE Thanos traveled to the future to put back the Stones to there places, so Thanos was there he just did not notice that someone took the Stones and put them back.
Apr 27, 2019 at 12:14 comment added tbrookside I think the Cap subplot is relevant because it can be argued that Peggy's dialogue in Winter Soldier establishes that in that timeline Cap hadn't gone back in time to be with her. So the timeline can apparently be altered, regardless of the Ancient One's exposition.
Apr 27, 2019 at 9:15 comment added The Dark Lord Your penultimate paragraph doesn't seem to be relevant. The question is about Thanos, not Captain America's timestream with Peggy.

Apr 27, 2019 at 1:11 comment added Paul @DhonJoe you seem to be missing the question. The point is that Thanos leaves his timeline right before the events in the original continuum in which Quill gets the Power Stone. He doesn't return. So how does the Snap occur at all unless there are multiple timelines? This has nothing to do with whether or not the Stones were returned. Even though Peter presumably can still steal the Power Stone, there's no longer a Thanks in that stream.

Apr 26, 2019 at 13:01 comment added Dhon Joe @Ongo "and even though they were put back a second after they were taken the events of them being taken still happened" yes still happened, but 9 years after, Thanos of that timeline did not know the stones were taken, and earlier Thanos will never travel to the future, because he will die 2 days after his snap by Stormbreaker, the Thanos that travels to the future is the one who discovered that the avengers travelled through time, not the regular one
Apr 26, 2019 at 12:49 comment added Ongo @DhonJoe Yes, but the gathering of the Stones from the past is what triggered Thanos to travel into the future, and even though they were put back a second after they were taken the events of them being taken still happened, meaning the earlier Thanos always travels to the future in a past where he's triggered to meaning he's always outside of his original timeline in a universe where he's aware of his future.
Apr 26, 2019 at 12:35 comment added Dhon Joe Cap returned back to put the stones EXACTLY where and when they took them, at that time Thanos was still in the past, he hasn't traveled to the future yet, the rest of the story continue as in 2014
Apr 26, 2019 at 12:07 comment added Chris Can you clarify how the events of this single timeline work around the period in which Thanos travels to the future? ie given thanos was erased from existence without travelling back to the past how is there a thanos after the point he disappeared to the future? Or are you suggesting that returning the stones meant that this change never happened and in fact thanos never in fact time traveled to the future?
