Aug 23, 2019 at 1:17 | comment | added | Deks | This is what I speculate too, but that would then suggest that the Reapers are excessively far away from Milky Way (if they awake at the correct time by themselves) and one of the reasons they need the Citadel relay to get to the Milky Way (because it can lock on to them and bring them into the galaxy). Depending on when the signal was supposed to bring back the Reapers originally (centuries, or even a thousand/two thousand years prior to events of ME1), we cannot know for certain how far away from the Milky Way the Reapers are. | |

In particular, there is no evidence that it "wakes up" the Reapers in dark space. In fact, none of the games ever describe how the Reapers are awoken, so the logical conclusion is that they wake up by themselves. | |
