Voldemort was calling himself Voldemort as early as his time at Hogwarts, both as a way to distance himself from his Muggle ancestry and to forge his own identity. He was also called "He-Who-Must-Not-Be-Named" and "You-Know-Who" because people were afraid to use the name after the fact, not because he was a secret villain that nobody knew the name of (unless I missed something in the books).
