This is probably "My Life in the Jungle""My Life in the Jungle" by Jim Aikin (1985). I no longer have the anthology where I read it (Beyond Armageddon, 2006), but tagged the story in the ISFDB as "fantasy, fruit, body switch, apes", which seems to match. In 1986 it won a Locus Award for Best Short Story.
