Perhaps my mind created it by itself. The cabinet isn’t mentioned at all between Montague being pushed into it in OotP and Harry running past it in HBP, so Draco could have taken it himself. Montague eventually turned up, disoriented, in a toilet so staff needn’t even have known that the cabinet was involved at all. Though Draco does call it “the one Montague got lost in last year” to Dumbledore, so presumably it wasn’t unknown that that’s what had happened to him…

Mar 26, 2023 at 19:04 | comment | added | Janus Bahs Jacquet | @Alex No, I don’t there’s any evidence of it either – it’s just a fair assumption. Filch seems the only likely candidate, unless Dumbledore himself put it there (which is possible, but I would say less likely).
Mar 26, 2023 at 18:49 | comment | added | Alex | @JanusBahsJacquet I don’t know that there’s any evidence that Filch was the one who put the cabinet in there. However, Dobby does say that Filch has used the room to get more cleaning supplies when he needed them (though that doesn’t necessarily mean he understood how to use the room).
Mar 25, 2023 at 13:36 | comment | added | Janus Bahs Jacquet | @Alex He did know that the Vanishing Cabinet was in there, though: when running to hide the potions book in HBP, he “took a left at the broken Vanishing Cabinet in which Montague had got lost the previous year”. So he knew that Filch, at least, was aware of the room (assuming that the task of removing the cabinet would have fallen to Filch), and by extension also Dumbledore.

Mar 24, 2023 at 14:47 | comment | added | fez | Strangely, the source of the Mirror is answered in a question about its fate. It says Dumbledore took the Mirror out of the Room and put it back, so he definitely has been there before. Case of unreliable narrator, perhaps?
