Jul 31, 2015 at 10:44 comment added Belegorn The Númenóreans were taught by Elves who came from Aman to Númenor. So Elendil having no real way to know is not the greatest retort imo.
Dec 23, 2014 at 23:37 comment added Matthew Piziak The fact that Galadriel refused to grant Fëanor her hair makes her gift to Gimli all the more meaningful.

Jan 13, 2013 at 8:28 comment added user8252 The quote saying Feanor is the best in everything was written in Numenor by Elendil. He had no real way to know.
Jan 13, 2013 at 8:21 comment added user8252 Indeed. But it's not a real contradiction, as all those quotes were not written by the same author in-universe. So it's impossible to know who was right. And those quotes were written long after the death of Feanor, so they could be wrong: with time Feanor's legend gets exaggerated, or in reverse, Galadriel gaining prominence in the second and third age gets boosted.
Jan 12, 2013 at 16:57 comment added Steffi Tolkien contradicts himself there again. How can Feanor be the mightiest in all parts of body and Fingolfin at the same time the strongest and Finarfin the fairest and Feanor at the same time the mightiest in beauty.
Jan 12, 2013 at 16:54 comment added Steffi Another Quote: "Feanor was the mightiest in skill of word and of hand, more learned than his brothers; his spirit burned as a flame. Fingolfin was the strongest, the most steadfast, and the most valiant. Finarfin was the fairest, and the most wisest of heart..."
Jan 12, 2013 at 7:22 comment added user8252 Quote: "For Fëanor was made the mightiest in all parts of body and mind: in valour, in endurance, in beauty, in understanding, in skill, in strength and subtlety alike: of all the Children of Ilúvatar, and a bright flame was in him."
Jan 11, 2013 at 20:36 comment added Steffi Really, does the other quotes say that Feanor is greater than Galadriel? I rather see that Tolkien is not sure who of the two is greater. He said "except Feanor MAYBE!" Not except Feanor and he said that BOTH are the greatest of the Eldar of Valinor, not that Feanor is, and that behind him comes Galadriel. I think in Tolkiens mind both became equal in greatnes (at least later in his life, when Galadriels power and importance emerged)

Jan 11, 2013 at 17:41 comment added user8252 She's not greater than Feanor. There is a single quote saying they are equal, all others say Feanor is greater, and none says Galadriel is greater.
