May 22, 2013 at 13:39 | comment | added | Anthony Grist | David Beckham doesn't really work since, as far as I know, that's his real name. There are plenty of more relevant examples that do work, though. Michael Caine, for instance - who hasn't seen the most recent Batman trilogy?
May 22, 2013 at 10:51 | comment | added | Slytherincess | Pele was big news in the 70s. Perhaps a more relevant and modern cultural reference would be David Beckham. I'm not sure why it's so upsetting that many people don't know who Pele is.
May 21, 2013 at 1:27 | comment | added | Raiccio | 96% of the world's population does not know who Jim Thorpe is. On the other hand 4% of the world's population hasn't heard of Pele. Bravo guys, I guess you are 'special'.
May 20, 2013 at 20:55 | comment | added | Jersey | So how did they get Pele out of... whatever? And I thought Jim Thorpe was Athlete of the Century.

May 16, 2013 at 1:45 | comment | added | phantom42 | Your overall point is valid - your example is riddled with hyperbole. There is nobody that everybody knows.
May 16, 2013 at 0:54 | comment | added | Raiccio | Apparently, my answer is invalidated because of the existence of the 'muricans.
May 15, 2013 at 23:04 | comment | added | Izkata | @AndyPerfect Besides, I only know Michael Jordan because of Space Jam and some commercials he was in.
May 15, 2013 at 23:03 | comment | added | Izkata | @AndyPerfect Nope. Soccer just isn't big in the US - I've never heard the name either
May 15, 2013 at 19:51 | comment | added | AndyPerfect | @phantom42 Even if someone doesn't follow soccer or even care about it, it's just a little odd that someone hasn't heard of Pele. It would be the equivalent of someone never having heard of Michael Jordan or Wayne Gretzky. One may not know anything at all about the individual's accomplishments, but everyone knows the name.
May 15, 2013 at 19:22 | comment | added | user1027 | @Rayhunter We Americans tend to not follow soccer.
May 15, 2013 at 18:55 | comment | added | phantom42 | Not at all. I couldn't care less about football/American soccer. Why would the name of some player interest me in the slightest?
May 15, 2013 at 18:54 | comment | added | Raiccio | @phantom42 I sincerely hope you were joking.
May 15, 2013 at 16:44 | comment | added | Ryan | @phantom42 You must not follow football (American soccer) at all then. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pel%C3%A9 Pele is considered the best football(soccer) player in the world, and was also named the Athlete of the Century for the 20th century.
