Remember that most of the weirwoods were cut down in the South. When Aegon the Conquerer accepted Torrhen Stark's surrender, he permitted the North to keep their religion. And even the priesthood of the Seven was afraid to stand up to kings with dragons. | |

Religious leaders don't have much political power (although maybe the current High Septon will change this). Perhaps there was more conflict when the Seven first supplanted the Old Gods. | |
