Jul 12, 2016 at 16:10 | comment | added | Dan Kelly | Alien was written by Dan O'Bannon and Ron Shusett, so they take precedence on development of the story. Aliens fleshed out many things, but didn't start the story.

Mar 7, 2014 at 22:33 | comment | added | Abulafia | @jdeBP: there are at least two alien origins in comics, both published by dark horse i believe. One is semi-compatible with prometheus, in that someone sent them, for some purpose (the details are lost) the second story have humans arriving at the alien home planet, independently of any engineers

Feb 22, 2014 at 20:35 | comment | added | John O | Point of order: I move that Prometheus, both AVP, and Resurrection all be ignored as canon. Instead, they should be shot out of a cannon into a deep ocean trench.
Feb 22, 2014 at 12:34 | comment | added | Valorum | @BrianS - I agreed with your point that without proof all there is is speculation. I'm not so sure you can jump from that to "they created the aliens", after all in Alien : Resurrection you find Ripley and various aliens inside a human genetic research lab. Aliens finding that facility could easily jump to the conclusion that we invented the aliens...
Feb 22, 2014 at 12:13 | comment | added | Brian S | The characters in Prometheus speculate directly about the likelihood that the building they discover is an Engineer military facility which was used to develop the xenomorphs as a biological weapon, intended to be deployed against Earth. While there's no canon "proof" that the aliens were created by the Engineers (as opposed to simply being appropriated and modified by them), I think the on-screen discussion about the possibility lends it heavy weight.
