Jul 29 at 2:38 comment added John Boston There was a novel titled 43,000 YEARS LATER by Horace Coon, one of the less distinguished Signet original paperbacks from 1958 or so, never reissued to my knowledge and generally regarded as pretty bad. It involved extraterrestrial archaeologists trying to figure out a defunct human civilization. I didn't read it so can't comment on whether it's an answer. There's a synopsis at goodreads.com/en/book/show/8110636-43-000-years-later .

Jul 5, 2015 at 20:32 comment added user47833 I remember a book with a title or sub-title that was something like "23,000 Years Later" that kind of fits the description but I can not find that one, either.

Sep 26, 2011 at 20:44 comment added user56 I'm sure that this theme has been done over and over. I know I've read plenty of stories where the writer's present is interpreted in a hilariously wrong manner by future people (human or not, professional archeologists or not). Is this a short story or a novel? What else does your mother remember? Is this happening on Earth or off? Are there aliens? What specific artifacts are dug up? Any detail you can add, even if it's tentative, can help pin down that story.

Sep 26, 2011 at 5:09 comment added apoorv020 I remember a short story like this, but it had aliens digging up human artifacts. They find a mickey mouse cartoon, and think that's what we looked like.
