Being a hero and a powerful Jedi, it would be easier for Palpatine to make people accept the Jedi have assaulted him (and thus, the republic), and it would help explain how he survived the assault (remember, the Senate didn't know he was a powerful Sith). And in fact, Anakin played an important role in Palpatine's survival - while much of it is no longer canon, Mace Windu might have been one of the few who could actually beat Palpatine, and Anakin eliminated him at a crucial point. | |
