Jul 5, 2016 at 18:40 comment added Omegacron This answer is way too long. Thoroughness is great, but at some point it must take a back seat to readability. Basically, your answer says if you can sit through the kookiness of the earlier episodes, watch them in chronological/broadcast order so that you don't miss all the references & easter eggs for previous events/episodes.

Jul 3, 2016 at 22:40 comment added John Sensebe @JasonBaker - Well, they put the Master in jail at one point, plus there's the whole business with him running out of regenerations, culminating in the TV movie. With the Daleks, the continuity has more to do with Davros than anything else, which is why I only recommend watching the Dalek stories from Genesis on in order. The ones before are incredibly loose with their continuity, and yes, the Daleks "end" several times. :-)
Jul 3, 2016 at 17:08 comment added Jason Baker @JohnSensebe I was already talking about the Key to Time arc, but I added the E-Space trilogy; could have sworn I'd had that in already, but I guess not. I was also already talking about the Master's introduction in Season 8, but I disagree with you over how critical it is to watch in order. Likewise with the Daleks; I just don't see much continuity between their appearances, and there are numerous contradictions (including several "Final Ends" of the Dalek race)

Jul 3, 2016 at 15:43 comment added John Sensebe I would add the few season-long arcs from the classic era, such as the Key to Time arc and the E-space arc. Those should be watched in order. Plus, I think all of the classic Dalek stories starting with Genesis of the Daleks should be watched in order, and the classic stories featuring the Master should be watched in order, as they do keep up a loose continuity. "The Five Doctors", even though it features the Master and a Dalek, is an exception. As a special, it isn't tied too tightly to the continuity of the show.
