Aug 5, 2015 at 3:30 comment added Wad Cheber @isanae - I think this is the best I can do for now. I don't have any more relevant information about the subject, but if I come across anything, I'll update my answer.
Aug 5, 2015 at 3:08 comment added isanae @WadCheber The plot thickens! But Bingo was a later draft. The "M" was the very first line written. You're still ahead. Keep those edits coming.
Aug 5, 2015 at 3:03 comment added Wad Cheber @isanae - Then I should have quit while I was ahead instead of adding a footnote which states that the third and fourth drafts changed the first sentence to refer to Bilbo's son and nephew rather than Bilbo himself. :)

Aug 5, 2015 at 2:12 comment added isanae @WadCheber C.T (uncharacteristically) doesn't say anything about the "M", which is why I asked. It did occur to me, minutes after posting, that it could be Mr (as in my comment). After your edits, I consider this answer better: it clearly establishes the fact that Bilbo was always the subject of the first sentence.

Aug 5, 2015 at 1:56 comment added Wad Cheber @Rori - The quote doesn't say it, but it is patently obvious that this is the case.

Aug 5, 2015 at 1:48 comment added Bamboo I'm confused. Where does the quote from Chistopher Tolkien say what the "M" was going to refer to? It just says that he stopped before completing the final stroke of the M and wrote instead `When Bilbo...'
Aug 5, 2015 at 1:45 comment added Wad Cheber I genuinely don't understand why you think there is any mystery here - Christopher Tolkien all but says "M was Bilbo".
Aug 5, 2015 at 1:42 comment added Wad Cheber @isanae - Check again. It isn't my fault that you answered your own question without realizing it. :)
