I read this answer to another movie identification question and the description was so similar to a movie I'm looking for that I thought it was the same one, but it's not.

The movie I'm looking for also features an old giant robot with a rocket fist and it also was shown about 25 years ago in the cinema, but I can barely remember the final scene in which the pilot fires his robot's arm and then his robot explodes. For a while, it appeared that he was dead, then the camera revealed that he used a trick and stayed alive in the rocket fist.

UPD 01.

  • It is the live action film with old SFX
  • I saw it in Russia, but - i believe - it was filmed elsewhere
  • It is not "Robot Jox" or "Robot Wars", i checked
  • My bad explanation. Protagonist was in robot at the fist launching moment. Fist was connected to a robot before launch. After the launch robot was destroyed (not sure) and the pilot appeared to be alive inside this fist. That i called 'trick'.

Hi, welcome to SF&F. Where was it you saw this? (What country?) I assume it was animated; do you remember the animation style?

could it be Robot Wars? youtube.com/watch?v=ypvoUEGuW8c not sure if this got a cinema release and its maybe older than you mention. Never watched the whole thing myself but stuff like the old piloted robot certainly fits.

Maybe Robot Jox from 1990? en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Robot_Jox Fist-launching is a plot point in several parts of the movie, but I don't recall the specific twist of the pilot staying alive inside the fist specifically. Commented Mar 14, 2023 at 13:55

This also reminds me of the film Big Hero 6, which ended with the robot Baymax releasing his rocket fist to propel his friends home from a parallel dimension. Baymax also put his brain chip into the fist so that he could later be rebuilt. This movie only came out about ten years ago, though. Commented Mar 14, 2023 at 16:00

Yes the first thing i thought was Big Hero 6 too, but apparently it's been done before.

Can the movie possibly be "Gunhed" (1989)?

In the early 2030s, a new material called Texmexium (more powerful than nuclear energy) enabled the world to be controlled by a new generation of super computers. Due to fear of misusing Texmexium, it was guarded within hyper-nuclear facilities that powered every major city. Concurrently occurring was the world's depletion in raw materials to create new all-powerful computers; conductive plastics and computer chips have out-valued gold and gave rise to tech scavengers that seek their fortunes through acquiring and selling computer parts despite the extreme dangers.

The scene you're describing happens toward the end and involves the protagonist holding the robot's arm and firing projectiles that result in an explosion and we see him lying on the ground for a moment, status unknown.

It's revealed shortly after that he is

still alive!

  • Welcome Mustafa. Your answer could be improved by the addition of a description of the scene depicted in your suggested answer that fits the question. A link to the IMDB or Wikipedia article relating to the film you mean would also help. Please take our tour and at your leisure then read the help center. Commented Aug 4 at 0:34
  • Is there a scene in Gunhed like the one described by the OP? I don't recall that. Commented Aug 4 at 0:51
  • Not exactly, but the OP says he remembers it vaguely so I assumed he may be remembering it a little wrong. The scene in Gunhed involves the protagonist holding the robot's arm and firing projectiles that result in an explosion and we see him lying on the ground for a moment, status unknown. Happens in the last 10 mins. or so. It's revealed shortly after that he is still alive though.
