Or, more specifically, to amend a catchy title, how rich was Princess Leia Organa?

  • We know that she was Alderaanian royalty before the planet was Death-Starred out.
  • We know from EU that tons of wealthy Alderaanians remained wealthy even after its destruction (e.g., Tatooine Ghost, or whatever that book was where Han and Leia hunt for the moss painting after the wedding), so she didn't necessarily have to be poor.

I'm mostly interested in the period after battle of Yavin (in other words, after Alderaan blew up) but before formal declaration of New Republic following Episode VI. However, I'm open to answers based on New Republic EU timeline as well.

I'm looking for canon evidence (Disney, or Legends/EU up to C canon).

I hope the answer is yes... that would lend itself to some great memes

Since she was adopted into the ruling family of Alderaan, it's probable that she has access to her family's off-world assets. I doubt she has to figure her pocket-change into her budget.

  • Rich enough for her dad to have his own star-cruiser, at the very least

She was not very rich AFTER alderan blew up. In the now canon comics Princess Leia it is seen that she has.....no money at all except what the rebel alliance gives her.

IF you think about it (and take the information about the empire and alderan into account it becomes quite clear). With how the empire treats alderans after its destruction they are very probable going to close all bank accounts that can be associated with alderans and give the money to the empires war machine instead. Thus as soon as a bank account is associated with her publicly it is closed.

The reason behind this is:

The empire wants to eliminate all alderans.....makes no sense to let them still have any money to use to escape.

For her having no real money (spoilers as it is from the comic):

The only real treasure she still has is the necklace of her family. She gave it to a sullustan for saving her as she didn't have any medal to give. Furthermore when they land on Naboo, she states that they have absolutely no money and thus had to trick the empire into believing that they are working for them in order to not having to pay the fees at the spaceport.

About page 27 in Princess leia (1?) comic she stated the no money part. And about page 62 for the necklace part

Why -1? However it could use a bit more details as far as citing new canon Dec 9 '15 at 11:45
  • @dvk no clue but I have stopped asking there a long time ago. what details would you need there? (added a bit more from the Leia comics)

  • issue and page # (or screenshot) would be perfect :) Dec 9 '15 at 18:39
  • @dvk added the pages there (hope I didn't miscount the book doesn't have page numbers....furthermore as far as I'm aware the book is in reality multiple comics.......and here we only got the one book collection in the stores so can't tell which part is of which of the separate comics.

It's Galactic Economy we are talking about. So, there's no reason why a Princess won't remain wealthy if you have canon sources of others who remained wealthy.

The situation is similar to this: Let's say, London or UK gets demolished by an Atom Bomb or natural disaster (I'd prefer latter for the situation or it'd be equivalent to the entire Galactic Economy getting disrupted) and one member of the British Royal Family survives. Do you really think that he/she would go bankrupt? Certainly, there would be significant amount of loss, but he/she would still remain wealthy due to foreign assets and investments.

I am not an expert on lore, but i think there are some factors that can be taken into consideration when assessing perhaps her wealth and lifestyle:

A) Alderrans financial role in the Rebellion. B) Her lifestyle as a princess C) Her dedication to the rebellion

A) If i understood from the movies, Alderran was not seen by Tarkin as a tool of pursuasion, but as a suspected threat. Although i do not doubt that the Grand Moff was a ruthless man willing to destroy a planet to break a princess, I feel that Alderran, and Leias Royal family were major background supporters of the war effort. In destroying the planet, Tarkin was cutting off a huge source of support for the rebellion.

B) She was an only child. And so that means she was the sole heir to the throne, and whatever wealth that might have carried with. As a ruler over the wealthy Alderran people, she certainly was no enterprising business woman intent on profit, but definitely had access to the wealth of the planet.

C) However, coming to the last part, I feel that she wanted to be much more of a front line player. While im sure she had the ability to sit safely on Alderaan and send funds under the table to the Rebellion (which is of immense importance to any large scale rebellion), she chose to carry the plans to the death star at the risk of being captured and imprisoned, led the strike force on Endor, and freaking infiltrated Jabbas palace to get back Han. She was no meek progressive, passively resisting the Empire while lounging on Alderaan, but actively amd passionately pursuing the ideals and people she believed in.

Leia probably had the wealth and power to be a "1%-er", but definitely did not live her life like one.

You're messing up Alderan with Naboo. Leia didn't know of her heritage untill after E6.

@Tony You are describing Amidala there, not Leia. Amidala is queen of Naboo for a time, then a senator and finaly mother to Leia. So im guessing that is why all the downvotes.

  • @Schuere Leia DID know that she was from Alderaan and was a daughter of Senator Organa. She only found out about her beeing Vaders daughter and Lukes sister in E6. So im guessing you are also confusing things here.

  • @Cherubel, i think i made a grammar error there... I meant she didn't know of her heritage of being a child of a higly representative of Naboo. As Tony states her Naboo wealth. the statement should have been: "messing up Naboo with Alderan"
