We know that the Knights of Ren first appear in The Force Awakens movie, and that Kylo Ren is a member of this group.

Is there any reference to when they were created in-universe?

I think this is a future works question. TLJ was completely silent on this group. Episode IX will have to address this, since the one place we see them (Rey's Force vision) was pretty central to TFA. There are theories that the Acolytes of the Beyond (a Sith-worshipping cult in the Aftermath series) eventually became them (there's some notable similarities) but nothing concrete exists to tie them together. – Machavity Dec 26 '17 at 17:09

If the answer isn't "the moment the whiny brat and his 12 followers went to Snoke", i'll eat C3PO's red hand. – DVK-on-Ahch-To Dec 26 '17 at 17:16

if TLJ proved anything, it's that the current batch of films don't have to do anything as it relates to solidifying previous film story points – NKCampbell Dec 26 '17 at 17:33

@DVK-on-Ahch-To They were probably Ben's Jedi Temple RPG group (Force Dungeons and Krayt Dragons, which we all know leads to the Dark Side). Afterwards, Snoke recruited all of them to get Ben. After realizing they were all Sith wannabes, Snoke flung them all out the nearest airlock – Machavity Dec 26 '17 at 18:19

@NKCampbell - wait, I thought the whole point of current batch of films was to endlessly recycle previous films' story points? Which seems rather solidifying :) – DVK-on-Ahch-To Dec 26 '17 at 20:58
