I have been trying (and failing) to identify a short story which I first read in a 1970s anthology.

It was science fiction with a touch of horror and centred around the invention and abuse of a selective memory erasing device. At the end of the story everyone in Britain had been fitted with the device and were enjoying the same meal and watching the exact same episode of a certain soap opera every single day - then wiping the day's memories and starting afresh the next day.

A story about a selective memory eraser... and you can't remember the title 🤔. – Laurel Dec 6 '18 at 20:52
