It was a series, something like Spaceways Patrol or something. Kind of pulpy, maybe, around the 80s. Small books, maybe around 150 pages.

One of the books had some guy who was storing his fat outside of his body in cases maybe, and when they were lost (or stolen, or destroyed), he was upset because you only had so much and he couldn't get it back. I know there is more to that but it has been over 20 years since I've read it and can't remember a lot. I know some sort of space police were after him for some reason.

There were other books in the series (at least one more), and I don't think this was the first book. Maybe Interstellar Patrol instead of Spaceways?

Edit:. There is a series of stories collected in a book called Interstellar Patrol by Christopher Anvil, and there is a story called The Nitrocellulose Doormat, but I found that story online and it doesn't seem like what I'm thinking.

  • May I enquire why he carried around extra fat? – Organic Marble Apr 17 at 23:57

I wish I remembered more. It has been many years and I can't remember that much. Just that part was very memorable. I don't think it was "extra" so much as maybe a part of his body that was maybe disconnected? I just can't remember. – lsd Apr 18 at 2:42
  • Thanks. Anything you can remember will help. Someone will eventually figure it out. – Organic Marble Apr 18 at 2:44
  • There is a series called Spaceways by John Cleve that runs to about 20 books. But I don't remember anything like the plot you describe. – John Rennie Apr 18 at 11:48
  • The spaceways books are pulpy, short and were written in the 80s, so it seems a plausible match. Can you remember anything else from the book that might confirm it? Do any of the covers look familiar? – John Rennie Apr 18 at 12:02

I remember a short story where there was a man who had a suitcase he treated like it was full of gold, and other characters eventually stole the suitcase, and it turned out that the suitcase contained a lot of his body fat connected to him by some space warp. That way the man was fit and active even though he had many pounds of body fat.

And that story should have been published in the 1960s. It is possible that the short story became part of a longer novel or series.

  • That's probably it. I bought it as a new book back in late 80s/early 90s, but it was probably a collection of stories from the 60s or so. Can you remember the name of the story? Searching for it doesn't seem to give a good result so far. – lsd Apr 18 at 15:58

While this may provide additional information in the search for this story, it does not answer the question. This is a comment, not an answer. – K Mo Apr 18 at 15:59
  • I agree, I would like more information to positively identify the story, but I believe this was part of the plot. Maybe it will help others identify it for me. – lsd Apr 18 at 21:36
