In one chapter of the Discworld novel Night Watch, a man tries to kill Vimes from a nearby roof using a crossbow while the latter is enjoying a cocoa outside the Watch House (it makes sense in context).

Vimes is saved by a promising young Assassin, but the man's crossbow is not an assassin's weapon and Madam later remarks, "That doesn't sound like Swing".

Lord Winter has not heard of Vimes at this stage of the story and Carcer is not the type to let the dirty work to others: Do we know who sent this killer?

  • My favourite Discworld novel and a great excuse to read it once again :D I think the answer is mentioned, but I can't recollect it atm. – silvith Oct 22 '12 at 8:30
  • @silvith Indeed (though "This is not my cow!" Thud and Thief of Time are not far behind :)) – Eureka Oct 22 '12 at 12:29

I just re-read the passage and the would be assassin may have been sent by the "Unmentionables." Did you catch on that the would be assassin was killed by the young Vetinari.

  • That's why I talk about Swing (Unmemtionables' head) and Carcer... They are the more likely suspects, but I cannot find any textual reference to support it. – Eureka Nov 29 '12 at 18:35

At the beginning of "Night Watch", a young Assassin, Miss Wiggs, is sent by Miss Bands to see if Miss Wiggs could get to a position where it would be possible to shot Sam Vimes. This is only an exercise, though, so the assassin has no crossbow bolts. Vimes is a bit disturbed to learn that the Assassin's Guild is now refusing to accept assignment on him because he is too hard to kill.

Is this the scene you are thinking of? It doesn't quite match your description - Vimes is shaving, not drinking cocoa. But the assassin was trying to get a line with a crossbow from a roof.

Definitely not. Eureka is quite clearly asking about the cocoa scene outside the watch house. – TRiG Nov 29 '12 at 2:12
  • Exactly: We know plenty about Miss Wiggs but never get explanations from the would-be cocoa killer (him being dead certainly does not help, even if it is not such an absolute show stopper on Discworld). – Eureka Nov 29 '12 at 8:32
