We see different forms of government in star trek. Examples include Vidiian Sodality, Breen Confedaracy, Romulan and Klingon Empires, Alliance's United Federation of Planets (which I am guessing though, is more of the interplanetary equivalent of UNO, with each member having their own forms of governing), Terran Democracy, Orion Syndicate (which again hints at an organization instead of a government, but still...), Ferengi Alliance and many more. What exactly are these forms of governing and how do they differ from one another?

We see different names, but we have little idea how the governments work. (The Orion Syndicate is a criminal organisation though.) Jan 14 at 14:15

Even if it doesn’t ask more than one question, it’s a very broad question. If you asked what exactly are the forms of government on the earth today and how do they differ, a complete answer would fill a large book. Jan 14 at 14:31

@ToddWilcox - And of course the old adage applies about countries lying in their names; The United Kingdom is heavily divided, most 'Democratic Republics' are totalitarian dictatorships, etc etc

So, it might be easier to address each separate government in Star Trek, and pose a separate question asking for what is known about how that government operates. Or perhaps what is known about how the governance differs between different time periods. Jan 14 at 15:47

@kesarlingHe-Him - The goal is to have all the answers on one site, not smooshed into one answer
