Many years ago, in the late 80s or early 90s, I ran out of stuff to read, so started reading my mom's textbooks. In one of her old literature textbooks, I ran across a story that was about a family that was traveling down a lonely road through some plains or a desert... somewhere in Central/South America (?).

I remember the vehicle (a station wagon?) getting a flat tire and when the driver got out to check it, he saw what resembled a dart in the road. After a time, more darts started flying at the vehicle, but I can't remember how the story ended, any help identifying this would be awesome.

Do you believe there is a fantasy or sci-fi aspect to the story?

  • It'd be more sci-fi than fantasy. But it would be super light sci-fi, not hard sci-fi.

I’m voting to close this question because OP has not described any science fiction or fanrasy elements.
