Looking for a story I read years ago about a multigenerational ship traveling across space and about to cross a huge expanse of emptiness, in a nutshell part of the crew takes over the ship and forces it to turn around and head back to Earth, help!

The Dark Beyond the Stars by Frank M. Robinson. The book has a wikipedia page. It won a Lambda Literary Award for gay SF/F. Here is the back cover blurb from the 1992 Tor paperback edition:
