In The Dark Knight, the Joker describes a scenario in which his father once came home, attacked his mother, and then brandished a knife at him, all the while repeating the line “Why so serious?”

Is this story true?

There's no clear answer as to how the Joker got his scars in The Dark Knight. In the movie he gives two stories.

  1. His father gave it to him as a child.
  2. He gave it to himself to cheer up his wife.

This is a reference to Batman: The Killing Joke where he sees his past as being multiple choice.

Small note on #2: he says it was his wife, not his girlfriend. – Brian Warshaw Jun 7 '14 at 10:17

Brian is correct. Original quote: "So I had a wife. She was beautiful, like you. Who tells me I worry too much. Who tells me I ought to smile more. Who gambles and gets in deep with the sharks. One day, they carve her face. And we have no money for surgeries. She can't take it. I just want to see her smile again. I just want her to know that I don't care about the scars. So... I stick a razor in my mouth and do this... //wriggles mouth// ... to myself. And you know what? She can't stand the sight of me! She leaves. Now I see the funny side. Now I'm always smiling!" – Polynomial Jun 9 '14 at 7:36
