What happened to this cast of jolly characters in the Metro series?
In the first Metro series book, and maybe some time into the second, the surface is populated by various grey-skinned mutants. The tall, neckless mutants, the librarians, the flying beasts etc.

In Metro 2033 (the book by Dmitry Glukhovsky although in the game as well) the main protagonist encounters "librarians" in the Russian State Library. Those are described as "Gorilla"-shaped mutants.
