Buffy the Vampire Slayer is a franchise spanning film, television, novels and comics. The titular character, Buffy Summers, is chosen to be the Slayer. The Prophecy of the Slayer states, "Into every generation she is born: one girl in all the world, a chosen one. She alone will wield the strength and skill to fight the vampires, demons, and the forces of darkness; to stop the spread of their evil and the swell of their number. She is the Slayer."

Buffy Summers and the Slayer lore was created by Joss Whedon and first appeared in the 1992 feature film, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Kristy Swanson portrayed Buffy Summers.

The idea was resurrected as a television series for the WB in 1997 (the series moved to the UPN network for its sixth season, in 2001). Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for 7 seasons from 1997 to 2003. Sarah Michelle Gellar portrayed Buffy for all 144 episodes.

A spin-off centered around Buffy's early love interest, Angel, was launched in 1999. Angel ran for 5 seasons on the WB from 1999 to 2004.

Dark Horse Comics published a Joss Whedon-helmed canonical follow-up to the Buffy TV series in comic book form. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight spanned 40 issues from 2007 to 2011. Season Nine's first issue was released in August, 2011.
