Buffy Summers and the Slayer lore was created by Joss Whedon and first appeared in the 1992 feature film, Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Kristy Swanson portrayed Buffy Summers.

The idea was resurrected as a television series for the WB in 1997 (the series moved to the UPN network for its sixth season, in 2001). Buffy the Vampire Slayer ran for 7 seasons from 1997 to 2003. Sarah Michelle Gellar portrayed Buffy for all 144 episodes.

A spin-off centered around Buffy's early love interest, Angel, was launched in 1999. Angel ran for 5 seasons on the WB from 1999 to 2004.

Dark Horse Comics published a Joss Whedon-helmed canonical follow-up to the Buffy TV series in comic book form. Buffy the Vampire Slayer Season Eight spanned 40 issues from 2007 to 2011. Season Nine's first issue was released in August, 2011.
