Dragon Ball is a serialized Japanese manga series written and illustrated by Akira Toriyama from 1984 to 1995 and later adapted into two anime series. Dragon Ball was inspired by the classical Chinese novel Journey to the West. The series follows the adventures of the protagonist Goku from his childhood through adulthood as he trains in martial arts and explores the world in search of the seven mystical orbs known as the Dragon Balls, which can summon a wish-granting dragon when gathered.
Since its release, Dragon Ball has become one of the most successful manga and anime series of all time. The manga's 42 volumes have sold over 152 million copies in Japan and more than 200 million copies worldwide.
While the original Dragon Ball had something of a focus on the titular Dragon balls, they became less central to the story as it progressed (particularly with Dragon Ball Z and its successors). Instead, the focus shifted to the increasing power of Goku and the foes both he, and his friends and family, would face.
The various anime series, in order, are
- Dragon Ball (young Goku)
- Dragon Ball Z
- Dragon Ball GT
- Dragon Ball Super
