The setting is a very high technology post-singularity post-human world, where minds are copied and run easily, and a few groupminds called the Sobornost pretty much rule the galaxy. In addition to Jean, the main protagonists are an Oortian warrior Mieli, and the spaceship Perhonen (an active character).
The books are characterized by extensive use of "show, don't tell" - the reader is dropped in the middle of a world filled with unfamiliar technological terminology and unintuitive quantum events, yet is pulled firmly along the ride by engaging narrative and characters.
