Star Trek: The Next Generation was the long-awaited television continuation of the Star Trek franchise after The Original Series was cancelled in 1969. The Next Generation, which followed the mission of Captain Jean-Luc Picard's Galaxy-class USS Enterprise D, ran for seven seasons from 1987 to 1994.
Roddenberry passed away during Season 5, although his direct influence had begun to wane as early as Season 2. Before his death, he reluctantly gave the green light to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine star-trek-ds9, a spin-off series that overlapped with the broadcast of The Next Generation by two seasons. The characters of Worf and Miles O'Brien were shared between the two series.
The Next Generation also spawned four feature films: Star Trek: Generations (1994), Star Trek: First Contact (1996), Star Trek: Insurrection (1998), and Star Trek: Nemesis (2002). First Contact and Insurrection were directed by Jonathan Frakes, who played Commander William Riker in the series and in the films.
The critical and commercial failure of Nemesis partly led to the 2009 J.J. Abrams reboot of the Star Trek universe. (The failure of the television prequel series Enterprise also contributed to this turn of events.)
