The Phantom Menace (1999) is the first episode of Star Wars (Episode I) and the fourth installment of the live action Star Wars movie franchise. It is commonly called the "prequel trilogy", since it was produced some 20 years after Episodes IV-VI were released, but chronologically precedes them.

The story revolves around Obi-Wan Kenobi, and his teacher Qui-Gonn Jinn, who are attempting to stop a war between Naboo and the Trade Federation. They manage to escape Naboo with Queen Amidala, only to wind up stranded on Tatooine. There, they meet a young Anakin Skywalker, who helps them win a part they need for their ship.

The party then journeys to Coruscant, where Amidala tries to secure help for Naboo, only to find bureaucratic red tape hindering her progress. Having been manipulated by her own Senator Palpatine (who is, unknown to her, Darth Sidious, who ordered the invasion in the first place), she starts a political revolt against the current Chancelor that ultimately sees Palpatine replace him.

Meanwhile, Anakin is refused Jedi training by Yoda. Jinn defies him and says that Kenobi will take him as a padawan(Jedi apprentice).

Realizing that politics still moves too slowly, Amidala, Jinn, Kenobi and Skywalker return to Naboo, where she recruits the Gungans to fight the Trade Federation. Using the chaos of the battle to distract the Federation forces, they break into the palace, where they are confronted by Darth Maul. Amidala captures the Federation Viceroy, while Jinn and Kenobi face Maul. Jinn falls to Maul, but Kenobi cuts Maul in half, vowing to train Anakin as his master dies in his arms.
