The Ring is a 2002 American horror film, a remake of the 1998 Japanese film Ring.
The American Franchise
The two currently-released films in the franchise revolve around a journalist, played by Naomi Watts, and her interactions with a videotape haunted by the spirit of a girl named Samara. Samara kills anyone who watches her tape seven days after they watch it, unless they first make a copy and give it to someone else to watch.
The second film in the franchise, The Ring Two, was released in 2005.
A prequel film, called Rings, is set to be released in November 2015.
The Japanese Franchise
Although the 2002 film was a remake of the 1998 Japanese film Ring, the two franchises have diverged since then. The Japenese franchise, which is also called Ringu, has spawned 4 sequels:
- Rasen, released in 1998
- Ring 2, released in 1999
- Sadako 3D, released in 2012
- Sadako 3D 2, released in 2013
And one prequel: - Ring 0: Birthday, released in 2000
