The phenomenon of time passing at different rates for different people. Most often used by science fiction writers invoking the Theory of Special Relativity, but not exclusively.

In works of science fiction that try to operate within normal physics, time dilation as described by Special Relativity is often used as a device for justifying time travel; by travelling at near-lightspeed, a time traveler might age only a few days while years pass on Earth. From the point of view of the astronaut, they would have traveled far into Earth's future.
